And discovered that those fine folks at Nintendo decided in their infinite wisdom to save 50 cents on some parts and eliminated the Gamecube ports on the top of the unit. Why should you care - you probably never had a Nintendo Gamecube and don't have any old Gamecube controllers, right? Well, maybe you've got a spouse or kids (or yourself, even) who happens to like to get down and boogie in front of your TV playing one of the dance mat games, such as Dance Dance Revolution (DDR)? It's terrific fun and great exercise, right? Well, guess how the DDR dance mats are connected to a Wii? That's right, with Gamecube port cables. So if you finally want to get around to getting a Wii and buy those cool dancing games your friends have or if your Wii died on you and you're looking to buy a replacement, you are SOL if you expect to use a DDR dance mat on your new Wii, as there is no sliding cover on top and no ports underneath into which one could plug the dance mat cables. I called to Nintendo and asked if there are any current model Wii consoles that have the Gamecube ports and was told that since 2011, no Wii units have come with those ports.
Well, my daughter and her friends love the DDR games, so this new unit got returned as Nintendo's tight-fisted bean counters took a good third of the console's functionality away, at least for our family, to save what surely must have been under a buck per unit. It really bugs me when corporate greed and avarice ruin formerly great products, so I deducted 3 full stars from my rating. If you don't think you'd ever play one of the DDR games or otherwise have a use for the Gamecube ports, then add 3 stars back onto the rating.
If you are looking for a new/old Wii with Gamecube ports, my first recommendation is that if you have an old one that died on you, contact Nintendo tech support about sending it in for repairs. That is probably now the most cost-effective means of resuming using your Wii with the DDR games. The cheapest alternative is to look for a returned, used unit on Cowboom, which is an affiliate of Best Buy that liquidates returned merchandise; they currently have dozens of old-model Wiis for sale. Look in the listings for white-colored Wiis and skim through their available inventory, looking for units that have a photo showing the top cover raised with the Gamecube ports underneath. Beware that many of their units are missing many, if not most, of the normally included accessories, so I'd read through a lot of their individual console listings to find one that comes with a remote and Nunchuk, Wii Sports, sensor bar, silicone cover, handstrap, console stand, etc... Since the ones with full accessories are only a few bucks more than the stripped down ones, it makes sense to go with one that has spare parts, particularly the remotes and Nunchuks that you'd probably want to buy separately anyway. As a final alternative, try eBay, but be sure to ask the seller before hand, if it is not perfectly clear from the auction listing and photos, whether the unit has Gamecube ports. Good luck.
