Just Dance 4 - Nintendo Wii (Video Game) newly tagged "wii"

Note: I only play Just Dance 4 with my middle school physical education classes. 4 play and the rest follow along as we use a ceiling projector.

Today I had 5 classes play Just Dance 4 for the first time. We played the "Just Sweat" mode using the 25 minute option using the cardio-boxing style workout.

It was TERRIFIC!

It started with a 2 minute warm-up to a gentleman that sounded like the karate instructor from Exerbeat. My students were all engaged with the various movements.

After the warm-up, the game would randomly pick a song. They were all fantastic but the student's faves were Skrillex (off the charts choreography), Mr. Saxobeat, Good Feeling, Moves Like Jagger and the J-Lo song.

After each song, another 2 minute program with cardio boxing, kickboxing and other aerobic style movements were done, all engaging. The actual program usually took 28 minutes with around 5 songs interspersed between the workouts. It even ended with a 2 minute cool down with good stretches. Ubisoft could make a separate game just using the workout segments, it is that good.

Between the 5 classes, we made it to Level 9 and unlocked various goodies such as a song (Umbrella), new avatars, game modes, 60's just sweat workout, etc.

I wish I could post a short video I took of my 38 sixth graders singing loudly and dancing to "Good Feeling", it was awesome!

A couple of classes also performed the quartet of "Instanbul" and many already loved it because our social studies teacher plays that song when they study ancient civilizations. To cool......and a great follow up to last years fav, "Night Boat to Cairo"

Great job Ubisoft!!!!!!!!

Small nitpick, I wish I could make a custom playlist for the just sweat workouts.

Mario Kart Wii (Video Game) newly tagged "wii"

If you are like me, you have played every Mario Kart game from SNES version to the Wii version. This one is my favorite because they keep getting better. Adding the steering wheel to the game really adds to the fun factor but you can play this without the steering wheel or you can use a non-motion controllers as well (such as a GameCube controller or classic Wii controller).

Gameplay: Race around with up to 4 players in grand pri mode with solo or team races, or battle it out in battle mode with loads of options including traditionally balloon battle, coin battle, king of the hill (keep the star as long as possible) and a few other modes. Single player mode adds time trial to mix and if you are online, you can race against a ghost of another player's fastest time. There are more racing levels than ever before. You get 16 retro courses from previous Mario Kart games and 16 new courses. Loads of characters to choose from and you can un-lock a hand full of extra characters by accomplishing certain tasks.

Graphics: typical Wii and Mario fashion.

Sound: again, same as tradition Mario Kart fashion.

Replayability: I find myself playing single player mode a lot but the real treat is when I have family over to hash it out in 4 player mode. It's worth picking up 4 racing wheels for this game. You can get some cheap combo packs but I wouldn't recommend buying them at Gamestop since 1 will cost you as much as 2 on Amazon.

If you like the Mario Kart games, you won't be disappointed with this one.

Hoover Platinum LINX Pet Cordless Hand Vacuum, BH50030 (Kitchen) newly tagged "wii"

Obviously, I bought this because it said "PET" in the description, and I wanted to be able to pick up pet hair - both that flying around on non-carpeted floors (as it does) and furniture.

I'll give you this: the vacuum is lightweight, well made, and has great attachments. It's the quality I expect and receive from a Hoover (which has been around for my entire lifetime).

Here are my suggestions for when it's a GOOD solution:

* If you have a cat/dog/rabbit/etc. that is very small and/or doesn't shed too much. I think if you have more than two pets you'd be pushing the feasibility.)
* If you have to clean a small area in a pinch - e.g., when someone happens to be coming over.
* If you are traveling by car or RV and want to do some quick cleanup. (It will also pickup your typical bits of dirt, crumbs, etc.)
* If you are able to point it directly at the hair you want to vacuum. (See my comment about the side vent, below.)
* If you require something lightweight and easy to hold because you have some physical limitations.

Here's why it IS NOT feasible in other pet situations:

=> The cup fills up too fast. I spent more time unlocking the cup, emptying it, checking under the filter, pulling out any hair that didn't make it into the cup, etc. then I actually spent using the vacuum.

=> The brush on the crevice tool did not stay locked in place. If you push on it just a bit, it becomes unlocked and slides down the plastic tube. For me, this didn't just happen one time: it happened every time.

=> The battery lasted 10 minutes total. The description says it has "2X longer run time and fade free power," and - based upon what I have read for other products of this type - this is probably true.

However, that's still a much shorter time than I expected. (There is a battery light with three settings so you can see when the power charge will be gone - sort of.)

=> The vent on the side blows away what you're trying to vacuum. This is a major nuisance if you are working on a non-carpeted surface such as wood or tile floors. You will end up chasing around one piece of hair while blowing others, and seem like you're doing nothing but waving this thing around. By the time you do all this, it would have been easier to simply pickup the clump of hair with your hands! (I think this also one of the most common complaints for other handhelds.)

For my situation/needs, this wasn't the right choice. I wish the title had said, "SMALL PET HAIR" because I would have looked for something else.

>>WHY DID I GIVE THIS ONLY 3-STARS?<<

I never like to give a product anything below 5-stars. Yet, when it really misses the mark, I have to be honest. (Sorry to whomever I have upset with this approach.)

The primary reason for this rating is quite simple: the product description is not complete. As with most product descriptions, the goal is to sell you on buying the product. I am certain Hoover tested this - again, because of their reputation. However, they completely failed (in my opinion) when it comes to describing the ideal user. (To any Hoover folks reading this, the list I gave at the top of my review would probably garner you a lot more business - especially from full-time RVers!)

Finally, I think the price point is a little high. Granted, it is a Hoover and does have a wide variety of attachments. But $119 is going to be too high a price for the pet owner for whom this is ideal.

Sharing Life's Abundance,
~Cindy

NASCAR The Game 2011 - Nintendo Wii (Video Game) newly tagged "wii"

NASCAR The Game 2011 is a Simulation Racing game that brings the true excitement of world famous NASCAR racing to home gaming consoles. A departure from earlier NASCAR games, this all-new racing series focuses much more closely on realistic aspects of NASCAR racing. These include: a deep career mode, advanced AI allowing for realistic driver appearances, extensive tuning abilities for vehicles, pit stop and spotter functionality allowing for crucial race strategy, severe in-game damage and improved online play.

NASCAR the Game 2011 game logo

NASCAR The Game 2011 completely redefines what fans can expect from a NASCAR racing game. In this all-new rendition players have the choice of creating their own driver from the ground up, or to race as one of the many real-world drivers included in the game as they roll through the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship. Each of the pro drivers available resembles his or her real world counterpart, making real-world rivalries played out in the game all that much more real. The game also contains 22 real world tracks, full pit stop strategy, ferocious damage and wrecks as well as a range of other on-track actions. In the end, regardless of the driver or the race NASCAR The Game 2011 has something for both longtime and new fans of the NASCAR game series.

Players progress through the grandeur of the NASCAR racing championships – the adrenaline-pumping NASCAR Sprint Cup series. Career mode provides the opportunity to compete at all the real-world NASCAR tracks alongside 42 other NASCAR legends - battling for points, victories, cups, and other race rewards. Drivers perfect their pit-stops, and master their racing reflexes in order to make 'The Chase', the final 10 races towards stardom and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship.

Using the Eutechnyx Damage and Wreck System cars are catapulted into the air, barrel-rolling over one another. Metal twists and tears like cloth, whilst sparks and fragments scatter across the track. Debris that litters the track is actual parts off the car. The damage system allows all areas of the car to realistically display damage build up, in direct relation to impacts and action throughout the race. Damaged panels react to inertia and vibrate realistically in relation to the car's velocity.

Pit stops and NASCAR go hand in hand. Throughout career mode, single player events and online multiplayer, pit stop strategy and efficiency is a fun and immersive part of the race. The pit stop sequences in the game mimic that of the real thing. Players witness their crew working efficiently to change all four tires, refuel and dial out handling deficiencies in the car, all in under 14 seconds. All pit stop animations are fully motion captured from a real NASCAR Sprint Cup team.

Spotter feedback informs the player of the drivers in the race that will work with him, to bump draft, block, or slingshot, all in real-time. Invaluable advice from the spotter also alerts the player to any hazards up ahead, opponents closing the gap or attempting to pass, as well as how to react. The player's Spotter advises with VO on the areas of the car concerning the team, as well as make real-time, calculated suggestions on the pit strategy. VO advice is based upon the car's current fuel levels, tire wear, and the player's position in the race, in association with the number of laps left. Even the player's position in the overall standings is taken into account - giving dynamic, informative and invaluable advice to the player.

NASCAR The Game 2011 supports online racing, and offers players additional modes of gameplay and the chance to increase their online skill rating. Players can join or create private multiplayer lobbies with ease, utilizing a choice of predefined race styles and additional race settings to create the race they want. Pit stops, tire wear, fuel consumption and caution flags can all feature in an online race if the player wishes. Players have the freedom to race with any of their cars online, any custom paint schemes and any tuning setups. Online play and split-screen also allows players to race as any of their favorite NASCAR drivers.

Memorex Wireless Nunchuk-Black - Nintendo Wii (Accessory) newly tagged "wii"

It has always baffled me how Nintendo could invent a wireless controller, then decide that any accessories for the controller must be wired. I mean, the Wii console itself was geared towards getting people more physically active, right? So what's so fun about getting whipped in the face with an accessory cord when you're trying to slay critters?

I've been through a handful of different wireless nunchuks, and NONE of them have been compatible with Motion+ or the Wiimote+ - up until now. I've tested this in 3 different motionplus-compatible games (Skyward Sword, Wii Sports Resort, and Rage of the Gladiator (wiiware)) and it works on all three perfectly.

The transceiver has two huge notches in the end, so it plugs into the Motion+ without physical modification. Also, the connector slides around, presumably so it works well with any strangely-shaped 3rd party wiimotes.

Additionally, when plugged into the wiimote+, the nunchuk does not disconnect every few seconds - which is what happens with every other wireless nunchuk I've purchased.

I've put about 10 hours on this one with zero problems so far, so I'm ready to consider this a well-deserved 5 stars.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land (Video Game) newly tagged "wii"

The story plays out in typical Kirby fashion, that being extremely charming (near cotton candy vomit inducing, and for once I mean that in a good way), and never gets in the way of why you and I pick up a Kirby title to begin with: gameplay and style.

Hal Laboratories has always been known for making incredible games with well-established mechanics that border on perfection (Kirby... need I go on?). Even though Kirby hasn't been sucking, eating, and mimicking in quite some time, I'd argue he hasn't done it better than here. All of the enemy abilities you would expect to copy, such as hammer, sword, fire, rock, even the adorable-yet-uesless sleepy ability, all make a return here and they're as great as they ever were. There are new abilities to copy as well, and they really mesh well with the classics. As in  Kirby's appearance is changed based on who he has viciously digested and copied, and they all look awesome. There really is something fantastic and viscerally satisfying about the traditional Kirby gameplay design, and it's really a blast here. Level designs are stupendous despite their simplicity and when combined with Kirby's puffball float-jump and his copying, it all makes for a truly memorable experience. I haven't had this much fun with a Kirby title since Super Star Ultra. Each copied ability has a range of contextual attacks depending on if you're attacking while standing, aiming, running, and jumping, which makes for a rather deep experience when you consider the many abilities you will acquire over the course of the game. Boss fights are as satisfying and epic as ever in Kirby's history.

There are some new features in the gameplay that are worth mentioning here too. For instance, remember how intuitive and satisfyingly implemented shaking your Wii-mote was in Donkey Kong Country Returns or New Super Mario Bros. Wii? Kirby's Return to Dreamland utilizes that action in much the same way. Some enemies are huge or glowing, and need Kirby's new Wii-mote shaking "super suck" to vacuum them up. Once digested, these foes allow Kirby to perform some truly ridiculous super moves, such as a sword that obliterates most of the screen or a massive fire-breathing dragon(!), and so on. Kirby's super suck ability is also useful for getting rid of impenetrable brick walls. These new abilities aren't really ever forced on you though, and don't feel gimmicky in the least, thank goodness.

If you have friends alongside you, there has been considerable effort put into co-op should you fancy such a thing. Other players can play as Meta-Knight, King DeDeDe, and Bandana Waddle Dee (who wields a spear). Of course, none of these characters can copy enemy abilities, but they each utilize their own weapons and modes of combat to bring to the fight. This makes for a truly unique experience for each player, as totally different complimentary strategies can be implemented. Players 2-4 can also just play as a differently colored Kirby as well, and that's a blast too. The co-op in this game really reminds me of the old days of gaming. Tails' role in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 comes to mind. Lives and progress are only penalized if player 1 dies, and if anyone else does, they immediately respawn next to Kirby. This design really harkens back to a time when playing a game co-operatively was all about having fun together rather than getting a great score or everyone being punished for one person's mistake (and subsequently beating the tar out of that one person). I love it. I always give games extra points for being a great opportunity to bond with my wife, and this game has already done that in spades and I'm sure will continue to do so for a long, long time (Epic Yarn was great for that too). We have had a blast playing this together so far.

Artistically and graphically, Kirby's Return to Dreamland is fantastic. Kirby games are usually the last hurrah for any Nintendo system, historically, and have always been the beaming example of what those consoles were capable of. Now, it seems with the Wii's console lifetime nearing its end, Hal Laboratories really knows how to squeeze out every last drop of capability the Wii has, even seemingly surpassing it. This is one gorgeous game, regardless of the simplistic art style and decidedly under-powered system it's on. It's vibrant and colorful, very stylistic, and nostalgic, which is exactly what I want from a Kirby game. When developers focus on art design over graphical limitation, it always makes for a better experience, and is why many of this generations' most beautiful games have been on the Wii (Metroid Prime 3 and Muramasa: The Demon Blade are both great examples of that). The music is exactly what you'd expect and want from a Kirby title, catchy, cutesy, and joy inducing. I don't think the soundtrack is quite as memorable as past titles, but it is still quite good and fits in the soundtrack canon.

Kirby's Return To Dreamland is a remarkable game. I bought it as soon as I could find a copy from my local *cough cough* because I just couldn't wait (lots of confusion regarding when, exactly, this game released. October 24th, 2011, was incorrect for many stores, evidently). I suspect that many of you are like me here. I grew up loving Kirby's many, varied adventures in Dreamland, from the original 2 Gameboy Dreamland titles, to the SNES classics, to the DS remakes, to Epic Yarn, and now this. It has been quite a ride (on a star, maybe?). It's not a particularly long title. Conceivably, one could beat it in seven hours or so on their first attempt. Of course, there's lots of incentive to keep coming back for completionists. I'd say it's a very good value, and I'm a relatively poor, newly-wed young man who has to pinch pennies. For Kirby purists, the timeless, refined gameplay, beautiful, imaginative art/sound design, and overall charm of Dreamland and its citizens will be enough to make this particular entry a real stand-out for Nintendo's pink mascot. As a longtime fan of Kirby, I look forward to playing this game over and over for years to come, and I give it the highest recommendation. Buy it, devour it, and be entranced by this gloriously triumphant return to Dreamland.

Wing Island - Nintendo Wii (Video Game) newly tagged "wii"

Let's be brief here.

1. Wing island is insanely difficult. The nice thing about flying in general is the sense of freedom. Wing island is like being beaten over the head with a relentless taskmaster. Expect to repeat missions 8 or 9 times simply because you've run out of time. It's that badly tuned.

2. Annoying / inane dialog. This is not just a reflection on the kiddy veneer over the game, but that the dialog, is long, empty, and annoying.

3. Broken rewards system. Great, you've finally found all those darned cows that are wandering around the island and you get... nothing. Successfully cleared some rubble from the docks? No pay for you.

On the positive side:

1. Flying formations, at least in theory, is kind of neat.

2. The controls could be kind of fun.

The sad thing is, with the solid control mechanism, Wing Island simply needed another tuning pass (and maybe a script overhaul) to be a lot of fun. As it stands, it's just another launch (ish) title that could have been better than it was.

The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia (Hardcover) newly tagged "wii"

The next section, "The History of Hyrule: A Chronology," is probably what most Zelda fans are most excited for. It begins with a chart chronicling the various timelines and when each and every Zelda entry takes place in the chronology. Needless to say, it's quite interesting and some of it will probably be very unexpected to many fans out there who, up until now, had only their own musings and theories to make sense of it all. What is even better about this section is the following 70 or so pages that actually chronicles, in great detail, the events of each timeline in chronological order. These different timeline sections provide a lot of details about the events of each game in their respective timeline, and can be viewed as an encyclopedia of Hyrule. It's hard for me to describe this section without resorting to spoilers so I'll just say this: the official Zelda timeline is somewhat complex, with major splits and events that lead to multiple timelines. Despite how easy it would be for this to be confusing, it is presented in a way that is simple and intuitive to read through, and boy is it riveting! It really feels like you're reading a tome of legends. Sprinkled liberally through all of this are nice screenshots and art, as well as fascinating tidbits, like boxes that fully decipher the various Hylian/Hyrulean dialect text that appear in the games. How awesome is that?!

After this is "Creative Footprints: Documenting 25 Years of Artwork," which goes for about 100 pages. This essentially boils down to old concept art the went into almost every single Zelda game ever made. It's all amazing. Newer games get more page space, obviously. Twilight Princess has about 32 pages, The Wind Waker (cannot wait for the Wii-U remake!) has 10, Ocarina of Time gets 6, and so on. You may think that some of the games deserve more space, such as A Link to the Past (1 & 1/2 pages!), and you're right, but the pages are pretty huge, and it's understandable that the newer games have more art stored than the old ones. Personally, I love this section very much. The layouts are great, and the pages are huge, so trust me when I say a lot of art is given its spotlight. This section closes with a very nice letter from Eiji Aonuma, arguably the second most important man behind the Legend of Zelda, after Shigeru Miyamoto of course. A great way to close the book.

Ah, but the book isn't over quite yet. The book ends in spectacular fashion, with an all-new manga by Akira Himekawa, the genius duo that have made many fantastic Legend of Zelda manga already. Anyone familiar with their past work will not be disappointed here. I won't spoil anything about it for you, but I will say it's an all new legend, featuring a new, original Link, that essentially spells out what happened on the surface with Hylia during the original war with Demise, a story that would eventually lead to the events in Skyward Sword thousands of years later. I love that even farther back than Skyward Sword's seeming origin story, there are even more legends to tell in this universe.

So that's the content of the book. It's all fantastic. The presentation and quality of the book itself is just top-notch. The lay-outs are nice, the printing quality is vibrantly beautiful and sharp as a tack, and the pages are crisp and clean. The binding is also high quality, which is important because this is a big book that would fall apart relatively quickly if it wasn't bound well. And how about that gorgeous cover? I love that they decided to make the Gate of Time from Skyward Sword the art on the cover. Its dazzling gold sparkle contrasts nicely with the forest green. It declares loudly and proudly to all who see it that this is a sacred historia of true legends, and you'll be proud to display it prominently. Great stuff!

I know this review is a little lengthy and full of praise, but man, if ever a encyclopedia/art book/celebratory tome deserved it, it's this one. As I said earlier, I love the Legend of Zelda. It is by far my favorite series in gaming, a hobby I consider my favorite pastime. There are few games that capture the sense of beauty, imagination, and adventure like the Legend of Zelda effortlessly does with each and every release. This book really honors the series' legacy. If you're a huge Zelda fan like I am, or you have one in your life, getting this book is an absolute must-buy-immediately. Buy it, get lost in this lovely Zelda celebration, and be inspired by the legends within.

Applica Clear 2O Water Pitcher #CWS100A newly tagged "wii"

After checking my local water quality and the substances I was looking to filter, the Clear2O was the only model that cut the mustard. I'd never heard of the product, as it clearly doesn't enjoy the market share of Brita or PUR, but I'm extremely impressed with the product to date after two months of use.

PROS:

- It fills quickly. Snap it onto the spigot, turn on the tap, and water is ready to drink in well under a minute. Given the sizable capacity, this is pretty impressive performance.
- The water tastes great. My first reaction after tasting water from this the first time was a sense of digust...wondering what I'd been drinking all this time any time I slurped something straight from the tap. The water tastes very similar to premium bottled waters, although I'll agree with other reveiwers that it does not taste like Brita/PUR product, which probably lets a higher degree of minerals through the gate.
- Big capacity: I hadn't checked just how much larger it is, but it is incontrovertible that this is bigger than your standard Brita/PUR pitcher. The website boasts 50% larger; I could believe that, as we go quite a bit longer between refills.
- A real filter meter. I was always aggravated by the simple timer that came on Brita filters; how would it know how decayed the filter had been? The Clear2O appears to have some sort of actual meter that tells you when the filter needs replacement due to wear, not simple passage of time. That will save money and guesswork on the life of the filter.

CONS:

- Special equipment needed. We have a kitchen faucet that's got a removable spray head.

It took me a little snooping online to find out definitively, so here it is: yes, you need to attach something to a standard faucet in order for this to work. Fortunately, we had a bathroom we don't use, and attached the spigot to that faucet, and we fill the pitcher in the bathroom (a minor inconvenience). That said, the hose attached to the pitcher was too short to work with a sink you can't fit the entire pitcher in, height-wise. If that's your problem, ensure you buy the Clear2o CWX100A Hose Extender.

- This thing is loud! It's bizarre to think of a water pitcher being noisy, but here we are. Hitch the pitcher up to the thing, turn on the water, and there's a noise that can best be described as grinding that emanates from the hose and filter working. Like I said, it's for less than a minute, but it's still noisy.

- Minor leak: as noted by other reviewers, I note small rivulets of water running down the side of the empty pitcher while filling, where the filter assembly meetings the spout. If you hold the pitcher directly upright, the problem is minimized, but...

All in all, I'm extremely satisfied with the product. The filters are cheap, far cheaper than buying water at Costco. It's convenient, and gives you peace of mind that the water you're drinking is indeed clean.

Kindle Fire (1st Generation) (Electronics) newly tagged "wii"

But if you don't plan on using Amazon at all to obtain your media, you may want to take this into consideration before purchasing the Fire. Additionally, the reason this product is so hyped, and one of the reasons I like it so much, is due to the ridiculously low price. Amazon reviews shouldn't focus on price, but it is hard not to with this device. On price alone, this is a five star device. However when looked at the Fire overall, and when compared with other touch devices (what little there is to compare it to), I have to give it four stars, since there are a few areas I feel could use definite improvement.

FORM FACTOR - The Kindle Fire feels almost the same in my hand as my 3rd generation Kindle but it is a bit heavier. It might be difficult to hold it one handed and read a book for an hour or watch a movie. You're going to need to rest it on something. The display is made of Gorilla Glass, which is a highly damage-resistant. You can still crack it, but I have used a phone with Gorilla Glass for two years on it and it has zero scratches on it despite being kept daily in my pocket with my keys. The back of the tablet is rubberized, so it won't slide around and won't get scratched easily. It also feels good in my hand. Despite all the companies that will be selling them, I do not think you need a screen protector. I have scratched Gorilla Glass before, but it is very difficult to do.

CONNECTIONS/STORAGE - On the bottom are a headphone port (which will accept external speakers), micro-USB (for charging and file transfer), and power button. The Fire doesn't come with an SD card slot, with good reason. As mentioned, Amazon wants you to get content directly from them. It also reduces the production costs. You can transfer your own content to the device through the USB connection from your home computer. The Fire comes with 8Gb of storage, which is enough to hold about 8 downloaded movies, 80 apps, 800 songs, or 6,000 books. I filled mine up right away so I never checked it out of the box, but apparently it is closer to 6.5Gb as the OS is going to take up some of this. You have to really become adept at managing your content through the Cloud. Books won't take up much room, but magazines are around 250Mb and movies are a little under 1 Gb. Free videos available through Amazon Prime cannot be downloaded, only streamed. So unless you buy a movie from Amazon or transfer one of your own, you must be connected through a wi-fi connection in order to watch your movie.

AMAZON CLOUD - If you have not tried out the Amazon Cloud Drive, you will be pleasantly surprised. You get 5Gb (which they will probably increase in the near future) of free online storage to store anything you want, and you can access it from anywhere. This combines very nicely with the Fire. 5Gb isn't much for my collection, so I upgraded to a higher plan (rates are $1 per extra gigabyte per year). I can upload a playlist to it and listen to it on my home computer, then when I get to work the Fire can access it and pick it up where I left off. Any songs you get from Amazon Mp3 are automatically stored on the Cloud and don't contribute to the 5Gb storage space.

E-READER - This was going to be the big determination in whether I should get a Fire or the new Kindle Touch. Ultimately I ended up getting both since I prefer the E-Ink technology to the backlit display of the Fire. If you are the type of person who reads a lot and expect to spend at least 50% of your use on reading books, I don't think you will be satisfied with the Fire over your Kindle 3 or the Kindle Touch, Wi-Fi, 6" E Ink Display - includes Special Offers & Sponsored Screensavers. It just isn't the same, and after hours of reading, the display would make my eyes hurt a bit (just like with any tablet). However it is nice not to have to use a lighted cover to see my books in the dark. The Kindle Fire is difficult to read in bright sunlight or on the beach. The touch navigation is very nice, but it doesn't function as nicely or quickly as it does on the iPad or even the Kindle Touch. This can be a problem for me, and the main reason I am using the Kindle Touch for reading books. Additionally, the Fire doesn't support real page numbers, even though the Touch does. So you have to use that ridiculous "location 121 of 16077 - 2%" format. A year of that with my last Kindle and I still don't understand what that means. They need to fix this in an update. Being able to touch a word and have it bring up the dictionary is incredibly convenient and takes less than 2 seconds. But still, the Kindle Touch handily beats the Fire for reading.

MAGAZINES - The Kindle Fire can also handle magazines, however the display is just too small to be an enjoyable reading experience. I tried out several different magazines, and the main problem I had was with the formatting. I tried to read an issue of Bon Appetit and my eyes were straining after three pages. There is no way to read a single article without zooming. The Fire handles magazines two ways: with Page View, which shows the original magazine display, and with Text View, which attempts to just provide the text of the article. A lot of magazines these days have several things going on in one page, with multiple columns, little sidebars and boxes everywhere, etc. I couldn't view a lot of this without zooming, the text is just too small. So Page View did not work very well for magazines like this. It is especially tough with magazines like Entertainment Weekly, Men's Health, GQ, etc. I found magazines like that unreadable on the 7" display. Magazines that focused mostly on the article, like Nature, Wired, etc, were handled much better. Some magazines even come integrated with embedded video and audio, which is a very nice feature, and one I can see being very useful for things like Men's Health, but I haven't had as much of a chance to use it yet. Text View is a very nice feature that works mostly well, but seems to get a bit confused with magazines that have complicated formatting, so it pretty much defeats the purpose since those are the ones I need it for the most.

COMIC READER - This is one of the main reasons I purchased the Fire. Amazon has a fairly extensive collection of comic books available for the Fire, including an exclusive deal with DC to publish many of their books. In addition to a proprietary comic reader that comes on the Fire, Amazon also has a Comics by ComiXology app available to purchase issues and subscriptions through. Although I initially thought the 7" display would be too small, it is actually decent enough to serve as a comic reader. I would definitely prefer a 10" version if they came out with one in the future. A 10" tablet is still the way to go for comics, but if you're looking for a cheaper option and portability, the Fire isn't too bad, and definitely beats a smart phone. It has a "panel by panel" feature that lets you scroll through the issue by different panels, which it will then zoom in on. You tap the panel when done, and it moves to the next panel. This is great for getting a larger view and working around the size restriction, especially since some of the text in the comics is just too small to read. Although it is fairly decent, if you are considering the Fire just for comic books, and you are a Marvel fan, you may want to hold off and look at another retailer's device which I think has a few more options. You can load your own .cbr comic files on the Kindle, but you'll need to use a third party app, like Comicat to do it.

AMAZON MP3/VIDEO - Amazon hopes that you will get the majority of your content from them. That is why the Fire is so reasonably-priced. Amazon music is DRM-free. DRM is copy protection. That means that the record labels haven't locked down the music you buy from Amazon to restrict how you use it. Amazon MP3 music is playable anywhere, even on your Apple devices. It also has a very high bitrate so you are getting great quality. You don't have to worry about not being able to listen to your music 15 years from now if Amazon goes under. It's yours forever. As far as video, I have always disliked Amazon's Video services. The prices are very reasonable and they now have a huge selection, but obtaining the videos is a huge pain due to Amazon's terrible Unbox player. That changes with the Fire, as everything is native and streams/downloads beautifully. If you make a lot of purchases with Amazon, or if you have several Amazon customers in your household, you should take advantage of their Prime program. In addition to the large selection of free videos now available to Prime members, the shipping advantages are amazing. I once had a 200 lb exercise bike overnighted to my house for only $3.99. Everything I order I get within 2 days. The Prime program seems expensive but it has certainly paid for itself over the years for me, and now is even better that it is integrated more with the Fire. The only problem I have with video playback is that everything I watched did not fully expand to the screen, and was letterboxed. Considering the small 7" display size, this was an annoyance for me. I know shows have different aspect ratios, but some should fit the display, and I think many users will be annoyed that they can't zoom or stretch the display to fit.

WEB BROWSING - This is another feature I was initially excited about. I like the idea of being able to use the Fire as a netbook. Amazon advertises "ultra fast web browsing" using Amazon's Silk browser. It is based off of technology that is designed to increase page loading times by pre-fetching part of the content. Sounds like a great idea, but doesn't work as well in practice. I tried out the Fire on several different connections and compared page loading times with other devices (all connected wirelessly). The Fire was one of the slowest. Amazon's own web page, which has actually recently been optimized to work with the Fire, takes an average of 7 seconds to load. Other major portals took a similar amount of time or slower. My iPad and my Xoom both load pages much faster. It is not slow enough to be a problem, but not fast enough to impress me or be worthy of Amazon's marketing regarding it. This needs to be improved. UPDATE - As of February 2012, page loading times are much improved. It can still be a bit slow and stutter at times, but you can increase this by following the steps at the bottom of this review. I am mostly satisfied with browsing now, although Silk still occasionally won't recognize it when I touch a link.

BATTERY LIFE - Amazon advertises 8 hours of reading or 7.5 hours of video playback. As an average, that's probably fairly accurate. During testing I got an average of 7.4 hours of continuous reading, and 7 hours of video playback over five tests for each. This is a big change over the roughly 30 days of continuous reading with the traditional kindle, so it may hamper you a bit if you're a voracious reader. I just got into the habit of charging it every night with my cell phone. You can shut down the Kindle or put it in sleep mode. I keep mine in sleep mode all the time because it is so efficient that it uses almost no battery. I can leave it in sleep mode for 2 days and come back and not notice any change in battery life, and since I don't have to reboot, it starts up immediately.

VS IPAD - As said, this isn't designed to be an iPad. I have an iPad and there is so much more I can do with it compared to the Kindle. The Fire serves a different (but sometimes similar) function. I just don't ever see Amazon building up the type of app store that Apple has, and that's where you're going to find the major differences. Additionally, the 10" display on the iPad makes a huge difference to me over the Fire's 7" display when it comes to watching movies and TV, and reading magazines and comic books. However, I think there is definitely room for the Fire to steal some of iPad's market share, as many people (I am one of them), will find the functions they want in a tablet can be covered by the Fire.

USER INTERFACE - The Fire uses a heavily modified version of Android. I really liked the interface, however I don't think it works as well on the Fire as it does on a full tablet device like the Motorola Xoom. Occasionally I would try to make a page turn and have it not register on the Fire, or have it register more slowly than I am used to. If you have a lot of experience with the iPad, you are going to notice that the software doesn't respond as quickly on the Fire as it does with other tablets. Although this is an inconvenience and something I definitely feel needs to be addressed, I can accept it given the lower price point. I will have a problem though if this is not resolved through a firmware upgrade in the future. The Fire's custom version of Android is very nice. The most recent applications or files accessed will display in a carousel format that you can rotate through. You can also set up commonly-used applications as favorites. If you want to access movies and pictures that you manually load onto the Fire, you have to open up the "Gallery" app, rather than accessing them from the "Videos" and "Photos" tabs. The gallery app does not very user-friendly at displaying these files. For instance, it just creates thumbnails for all your video files and doesn't let you view the file names when selecting a video. If you have dozens of videos from a single TV show, there is no easy way to organize them in the gallery. It's clear Amazon wants you to view their videos purchased from them rather than your own. I would really like to see them fix this through a simple firmware update but I doubt they will.

NEGATIVES:
- No bluetooth and no HDMI. I could really use bluetooth for integration with bluetooth-capable speakers and so I can use bluetooth audio in my car. As a media player, I feel this really should have been included, and I imagine it will with future versions. This is especially important since the audio from the speakers is a bit tinny and weak. I have been using headphones with all my media-playing, which significantly improves the sound. There is also no physical volume button, which is a pain when you need to silence the device quickly (EDIT: You can sideload the "Volume Control" app by RubberBigPepper" from the Android Market for a great software workaround to this). I also would like HDMI output so I can take my Amazon video purchases and watch them on my TV. Another big disadvantage in a device that is made for media. This will also likely be included in a future edition, so at $200, I don't feel bad about possibly having to upgrade a year from now to get it.
- Only 8Gb storage space. As mentioned, this device is mainly designed to integrate with Amazon's Cloud, so 8 should be enough, but it would be nice to have at least 16. I imagine Amazon did this on purpose to force people to use their Cloud service.
- Touch capability can sometimes be sluggish. iPad and other tablet owners may be disappointed with the touch reaction time and some aspects of the software.
- Video doesn't include option to zoom or stretch the display to fit the screen.
- Very limited selection of apps from the Amazon App Store. Most of the apps are mediocre games. UPDATE - you can get around this by manually loading apps onto the Fire. Do a search for "sideload kindle fire." It is very easy.
- Web "Accelerator" is not as fast as other tablets.
- No Micro-USB transfer cable included with it. Another way for Amazon to discourage you from transferring your own files to the device. If you want to do that, you will need to purchase one separately, like the AmazonBasics USB Cable - 2.0 A Male to Micro B (6 Feet / 1.8 Meters).

SUMMARY: Bottom line, you will not find a cheaper device out there for streaming music, video, and books than the Kindle Fire. The reason that this device is so amazing is not for what it can do, but for what it can do at such a cheap price. The price tag, not the technology, is the story here. Although I definitely feel there is room for improvement and will be interested in seeing Amazon's second generation of this device (which I think will be significantly improved), the Kindle Fire is a solid start. If you can wait a year or more for Amazon to work out the kinks with the Fire (like it did with its 1st generation of the Kindle), you should definitely do that. The next version should fix a lot of the problems that keep the current Fire from being a "Five Star" product. Unfortunately, reviews shouldn't focus on price, so due to some issues with the form factor and touch interface, I can only give it four stars. It is just not "perfect" enough for me to say it is a five star product without taking price into consideration. But aside for that, there is really only one device you can compare the Fire to - The Nook. So for what it is, I would have no problems recommending the Fire to consumers who can take advantage of it. This product more than lives up to what it is DESIGNED to do. If you plan on getting most of your content from Amazon AND you have a Prime membership, I think you will really find this is a pretty incredible device for the money.

UPDATE 28 Dec 2011: After getting a new case for the Fire that makes it easier to hold, I'm starting to use it more for reading (although I still prefer my Kindle Touch for anything over about 45 minutes). Some magazines are now better adapted to the Fire liked my subscription to Wired, and some are still terrible and just compressed PDFs. An update released last week adds more privacy features so you can delete recent history form the carousel, and does improve noticeably on the touch sensitivity, although it can still be frustrating at times and not as smooth as something like an iPad. Browser loading times are still disappointing, but not as bad as they were at first release, and I don't notice them as much. I am continually impressed at battery usage for this device. Despite using it less than an hour a day, I never turn it off and only charge it a couple times a week. The rest of the time it sits in standby mode which is extremely efficient. If they could improve a couple more options I'd be closer to giving the Fire five stars.

UPDATE 7 Feb 2012: I have been able to update the browser significantly by doing the following: Open up the browser and select the menu button at the bottom, select the Settings button, and then change the following options:

Enable plug-ins: Change this to "off." This will disable Flash, so if you have any web sites that need it you can re-enable it (YouTube works fine).
Accelerate page loading: Uncheck this. If your wifi connection is decent, it's not really necessary.
Mobile (This one is optional, but I prefer to view everything in mobile mode rather than having Silk trying to force a desktop view on a 7" screen."

Raving Rabbids Party Collection (Video Game) newly tagged "wii"

I have never played any of the Rayman games, so I don't really know any of the backstory on the main character or even what Rabbids are supposed to be. But none of that really matters anyhow! Rabbids are insane, this game collection is chock-full of slapstick humor, and story has very little to do with it!

Essentially, this is a HUGE collection of mini-games. They range from overly-simplistic to downright infuriating in diffuculty (especially if you're aiming for high-scores). But every mini-game is fun in its own way. There are rhythm, racing, shooting, flying, drawing, reflex, and just outright silly game types to play. There's something that almost anyone can find to enjoy. I'm in my mid-30's and had a blast with it, and my 8-yr-old girl was able to play most of the mini-games without too much trouble and had a fun time doing it too.

On another note, quite a few of the mini-games border on digital-animal abuse (not that the Rabbids don't have it coming to them anyhow ;). Depending on your outlook, this could be a plus or minus to the game. While there is nothing particularly graphic in nature, there is plenty of "Looney Toons" style violence to be found. Parents who are opposed to such material for their kids should steer clear of this title. Everyone else, enjoy the meyhem!

Inglow CGT54300CR01 Flameless Round Pillar Vanilla Scented Candle with Timer, 3-Inch Tall, Cream (Tools & Home Improvement) newly tagged "wii"

Pros:

- These candles look nice when the light is off.
- The wax coating is a little more white than cream, but very attractive.
- The flicker effect is very nice.
- The candle emits light all the way from the top to about 2/3 down, instead of just at the top
- I like that this Inglow candle just shows a burnt wick that looks realistic when not lit.
- I like the vanilla scent, although it did strike me as a little artificial when I first opened the packaging. It mellowed nicely after being opened.

Cons:

- What bothers me is that the LED light emits an orange color, rather than a warm yellow. It doesn't resemble the color of a real candle flame at all.
- The top edge of the candle is perfectly level and squared off compared to how a candle would look if it had burned for while (with uneven, slightly rounded edges).

I have found the orange color to be a common problem among flameless candles and I bought several types to compare and hoped to find some that were more realistic in color.

The most realistic flame color in a flameless candle that I discovered is the Enjoy Lighting Flameless LED Candle Drip Timer Pillar Candle Beeswax. Another thing I like about the Enjoy candle is that it has a curved top edge with some candle wax drips down the side that look very realistic. However, it has the disadvantage of having three LEDs instead of one which is why it requires 4 AA batteries instead of 2. Another disadvantage is that the LEDs are exposed (although fairly deep inside the well of the candle so hard to see). A small disadvantage is that the light is concentrated at the top of the candle (the bottom 2/3 of the candle doesn't glow at all).

Overall, I strongly prefer the Enjoy brand that has 3 LEDs for a more realistic flame color. These are going to be returned!

As clean filters, the product is not restrictive to air flow. Filters will
become restrictive if they are not changed when needed. We say filter life
is approximately 3 months and this is an approximation. Filter life is
actually determined by the user's living conditions and will vary for every
user. To determine when the filter needs to be change, we suggest holding
it up to the light. When you cannot see light through the filters, it will
need to be changed even if it is before 3 months.

If you are concerned about airflow, you might want to use the Dust & Pollen
filter which has the lowest pressure drop, and change it more frequently.
The capture rate of this filter is also lower.

Skylanders Giants Portal Owner Pack - Nintendo Wii (Video Game) newly tagged "wii"

(2) Skylanders Giants Portal Owner Pack: This includes the game and Tree Rex only and is designed for those that do not wish to purchase a second portal.

Gameplay: Skylanders Giants operates on the same story mode principles as the first game. You are still battling Kaos who is always good for some great villainous comedy! Vocal talent like Patrick Warburton returns and there are new voices like George Takei and Bobcat Goldthwait. The game, honestly, feels a little skimpy at 16 chapters as opposed to the original's 22 (before expansion packs). Running straight through, you could probably finish this game very quickly. There are, however, more collectibles (soul gems, hats, treasures) and more items to buy. Some of the challenges are a bit more difficult as are the Big Boss battles. But the addition of Giants to these confrontations is a nice boost of power.

Extras: There still exists a Battle mode for those that like to pit their characters against one another in different arenas of chance and skill. And the Heroic Challenges (one of my favorite aspects of the original Skylanders) has some great new twists and challenges.

Giants: The Giants certainly look cool. They are bigger (duh!) and Tree Rex is pretty awesome. They light up on the portal unlike previous characters and are able to smash through things, stomp around creating more havoc and opening up surprising new pathways, and performing other strength maneuvers that help you proceed. In many cases, they can do damage that you previously needed a bomb to accomplish. There will be a total of eight new Giants figures: Swarm, Crusher, Bouncer, Tree Rex (already available) AND Eye Brawl, Ninjini, Thumpback, and Hot Head (yet to be released).

Old Figurines: The new game recognizes all of the progress that you have already earned on your initial figures. I was afraid that they would feel obsolete, but they have also gotten an increase in levels. The initial Skylanders capped them at level ten, now they have been expanded to 15 levels (so you can progress them to new powers).

New Regular-sized Figurines: There are eight new character figures (Pop Fizz, Chill, Flashwing, Sprocket, Hot Dog, Shroom Boom, Jet Vac and Fright Rider) with a couple of new features as well as new reposed characters featured already in the first game (they are distinguished as Series 2 on packaging) that light up (like the Giants) with these same new features and a Smart Bomb attack mode.

I love Skylanders, it's just a fact. I might have hoped that this new incarnation might have taken a few more chances and varied the game play. I might also have hoped it was longer and more intricate. But it is solidly entertaining. Just be cautious, as in the original--the soul gems will convince your kids that they need more, more, and even more. While it doesn't look like the financial commitment will hit as deeply this time around, it is still a sizable investment for avid collectors or completists. KGHarris, 10/12.
